"Are same-day crowns worth the hype?"
Dr. Kasan Stevens gets asked this question all the time and the answer is always the same: Definitely!
If you're still hesitant about opting for same-day crowns, here are some of the benefits they can offer.
Just as the name suggests, same-day crowns are ready in just one day.
With traditional crowns, you need at least two appointments to restore your tooth. The first appointment is usually for repairing the tooth and taking the impressions. Then, about two weeks later you come in for a second appointment to get the crown cemented on the tooth.
Because same-day crowns use advanced CEREC technology (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic,) this process becomes significantly shorter and stress-free. The dentist will take impressions and manufacture the crown all in just one appointment, saving you a lot of time and discomfort.
You can get a perfect fit with traditional crowns too, but there can be a lot of back and forth between the dentist and the lab. If the dentist made a mistake and the crown doesn't fit well, they will need to take new impressions, send them to the lab again, and wait for another two weeks for the new one.
Because same-day crowns are made in the dentist's office, they can remeasure and make any adjustments during the same appointment.
Let's be honest: dental putty is uncomfortable and has a bad taste. Yet, you can't get a traditional dental crown without getting an impression of your mouth, and you will often need dental putty for that.
Same-day crowns, on the other hand, use digital scanning to take highly accurate images of your mouth, which the dentist will use to create your crown.
Since same-day crowns are made in the dentist's office using a milling machine, they are not as durable as traditional ones, right? Nothing further from the truth.
Same-day crowns are made from porcelain and are as sturdy and durable as traditional ones. More specifically, same-day crowns can last up to 15 years or longer with proper care.
With same-day crowns, you will come in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a restored smile in just a couple of hours. That means that you won't have to use a temporary crown anymore, which can be quite uncomfortable.
Of course, you can! At Stevens Dental, we offer both traditional and same-day crowns, so stop by our practice to learn more about them.
